How to Make a Healthy McDonald’s Menu Snack Wrap

It’s been nearly a decade since the snack wrap has been on the McDonald’s menu. On April 15, 2025, the company teased the return of the fan favorite on their X (formerly Twitter) account. The status stating “snack wraps 0x.14.2025”, sent fans of the beloved item into a frenzy on X and online.
The comeback date appears to be quite vague. Many speculate that it may be back in October of this year. I was thinking it would be back no later than September, hence the “0x” portion of the tweet. Nevertheless, I’m a huge fan of the snack wrap. If you’re anything like me, I’m not looking forward to waiting that long for the relaunch. You can make a more healthy just as tasty version right away using the recipe below!

Below are some recipe tips to ensure you create the best homemade snack wrap.
Recipe Tips

- Start the chicken off in a COLD pan. This allows the chicken to cook more evenly and allows whatever fat in the breast to render slowly. It cooks in it’s own juices resulting in a more flavorful chicken and this means you don’t need to add any extra oil.
- Brine the chicken. If you have the extra time, consider brining your chicken breast for at least thirty minutes. This give the chicken breast the juiciness that is sometimes not naturally present in white meat.
- Make sure the tortillas flexible. If you’re using older flour tortillas that have become stiff, place a damp paper towel or clean kitchen cloth on top and warm it in the microwave for about twelve to fifteen seconds. That way, you’ll be able to roll your flour tortillas effortlessly.
Why this Wrap is Healthier than the McDonald’s Menu Wrap

The original McDonald’s snack wraps were made with fried chicken, and grilled chicken came later. Fried foods in moderation is fine, but it is not the healthiest option to consume regularly. By now, it is common knowledge that baked or grilled chicken is the healthier option. Fried chicken, and fried food in general contains high amounts of trans fat, saturated fats and carbohydrates. Eating too much of this for extended periods of time can lead to poor health conditions like diabetes and heart diseases.
The ingredient in this recipe that most deviates from the original wrap is the replacement of the processed flour tortilla with a whole wheat tortilla. This simple swap comes with a handful of benefits. Whole wheat contains the entire wheat kernel, which is where all the nutrients are located. The wheat kernel consists the bran and the germ. Whole wheat is higher in Vitamin B6, Vitamin B9, Vitamin E, magnesium, zinc, chromium, and fiber.

Enriched foods are foods that have nutrients added back in after processing. So, in that case, what about enriched white flour? Is that as healthy as whole wheat flour? While it does include more nutrients than non-enriched white flour, it still lacks protein, fiber, and contains less nutrients than whole wheat flour.
Swapping white products with whole wheat products can be practiced beyond this recipe. You can replace white bread with wheat bread, white rice with brown rice, white flour with whole wheat flour, and even regular pasta with whole grain pasta.
Storage and Food Safety
To prevent foodborne illness, store the prepared wrap in your refrigerator for no more than seven days. For optimal freshness, consume within three days of preparation. Always reheat the leftovers until they reach 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Now that we have a recipe for the homemade version and we know how to store it safely, let’s dive into the origins of the original snack wrap from McDonald’s.
History of the Snack Wrap
The original snack wrap first appeared on the McDonald’s menu in the summer of 2006. It consisted of a piece of crispy (fried) chicken on a soft flour tortilla with shredded cheddar jack cheese, shredded lettuce and ranch. It was created by a trained Culinary Institute Chef. It was made with simple ingredients and it was easy for workers to assemble. Within a few months, it was looking like the wrap may be one of the most successful launches in the company’s history.
In 2007, the company included the option to substitute the crispy chicken to grilled chicken. You could also replace the ranch with tangy honey mustard sauce. Naturally the company wanted to expand and create other version of the wrap. One popular version was the chipotle barbecue snack wrap, which was also my favorite! Other versions were lesser known and proved to be not as popular.
Sometimes too much innovation at once can be a bad thing. The company continued to pump out other versions, and it seemed to have taken away from the simplicity of the original. Even the workers voiced that the more complex versions took too long to make. Additionally other restaurant chains such as KFC and Wendy’s tried to replicate the Snack Wrap’s success. As a result, the snack wrap was taken off the McDonald’s menu in 2016.
Fans Call for Changes to McDonald’s Menu

A snapshot of few of just over 100 petitions created from 2018 to 2024 by dedicated fans to bring the snack wrap back to the McDonald’s menu.
Many snack wrap fanatics, like me, were disappointed with the removal of the item on the McDonald’s menu. There are numerous change.org petitions to get the item back on the menu. The United States President of McDonald’s, Joe Erlinger, even stated that he would receive numerous emails asking for the return of the snack wrap in his email inbox.
There is certainly power in numbers. T=It seems as if the high volume of emails and numerous petitions about the snack wrap finally was able to get McDonald’s to act and the snack wrap is on it’s way back in 2025!
