Erewhon is said to be the most expensive grocery store in the world right now. However, are higher prices equal higher quality nutritional products?

In this post, we’ll examine the ingredients that are used in their classic and signature smoothies. You will also be given nutritionally comparable alternatives to niche ingredients that may not be available everywhere to everyone.

Breaking Down the Word “Organic”

One commonality among the Erewhon smoothie ingredients is that most of the ingredients are organic. In the United States, organic is a protected term. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines organic as a label that indicates that a food or product, farmers and businesses has met the USDA organic standards for growing processing and handling of their products. The diagram below provides a brief overview of the standards.

Erewhon smoothies’ ingredients that are labeled as organic specifically read as “Organic X”. There are four different organic labels according to the USDA. These include “100 Percent Organic”, “Organic”, “Made with Organic ___”, and Specific organic ingredient listings.

Produce can be called organic if it’s certified to have grown in soil that has had no synthetic fertilizers and pesticides applied three years prior to harvest.

While it seems like this is a good thing that their ingredients are organic, does that mean they are healthier than conventional ingredients?

Organic vs Conventional Foods

There are many benefits to eating organic foods. People who eat more organic food are exposed to less pesticides and seem to have fewer cases of cancer. Pregnant women may benefit from eating organic foods as pesticides may be linked to complications and abnormal fetal development.

However, this doesn’t make organic foods the top choice. They do not contain more nutrients than conventional foods. People who eat organic food also seem to be more active, don’t smoke or drink, and lead generally healthier lifestyles. Therefore it is hard to conclude that organic foods are healthier for you.

Many factors play a role in the types of foods we choose to consume. As long as you are striving to eat the daily recommended servings of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, that counts more than consuming organic or conventional foods.

Now that we’ve broken down the word organic, let’s discuss the base ingredients for each Erewhon smoothie.
